Cvikov Brewery
a story that
we are proud of

The origins of beer brewing in Cvikov date back to 1560, when the provincial nobility officially granted 72 Cvikov townsmen the privilege to brew wheat beer and to produce malt.

Today we continue this rich tradition and, with respect for history, we brew beer that has gained popularity not only in our region. In early 2024, we merged the Cvikov Brewery with the Kutná Hora Municipal Brewery and expanded our offer of quality craft beers.

New life of the Cvikov Brewery
A place where traditions
and diverse experiences meet..

A new chapter in the story of the Cvikov Brewery began in 2013. Almost fifty years later, the dilapidated premises found new owners in businessmen Jiří Jakoubek and Viktor Tkadlec from the nearby town of Nový Bor, who aimed to restore the disrupted beer brewing tradition. Their efforts have successfully breathed new life into the brewery and built on its rich history.

  • 2013

With the help of a range of co-workers and specialist companies, Jiří Jakoubek and Viktor Tkadlec, the latter of whom has many years of experience in beer brewing and running a brewery, rebuilt the production area of the brewery. In the premises of the former malt house, they built a cosy brewery restaurant with modern kitchen facilities and a delicately designed interior.

  • 2014

In autumn 2014, less than a year after the brewery’s reconstruction began, chief brewer Miloš Hrabák managed to brew the first batch of the bottom-fermented pale lager Klíč. Other batches soon followed – not only beers with 12% malt extract, but also beers such as Luž, 10% malt extract, and Sklář, 8%. The brewery’s grand opening was held on Saturday 29 November 2014, with the Sladovna Restaurant opening in December of the same year.

  • 2015

About half a year after reopening, the brewery expanded its range of commercial beers. The fourth beer in the permanent selection was the unpasteurised, but unlike the others, filtered light lager Hvozd, 11% malt extract. The four beers in this basic assortment were then complemented by the semi-dark lager Sváteční, 13% malt extract, brewed using classic double-mashing technology from three types of malt – Pilsner, Bavarian and caramel.

  • 2016

After a year of operation, the Sladovna Brewery Restaurant expanded its range of services with a renovated barn on the brewery premises in Cvikov. It was mostly used in the summer, when various celebrations, corporate parties and wedding receptions were held there.

In the same year, we also opened the first Sladovna restaurant in Prague, on Vodičkova Street in the heart of the capital. Customers can try the full range of Cvikov beers, some straight from the tank, and enjoy traditional Czech cuisine with a modern approach.

  • 2018

In July 2018, we expanded our services to include accommodation in the Kleis Hotel, which was built on the floors above the Sladovna Restaurant, in the brewery’s former granary. The modern renovated hotel offers cosy and stylishly furnished rooms that carefully combine the history of the location with the comfort of today. Accommodation in the Kleis Hotel is the ideal starting point for exploring the beauty of the Lusatian Mountains and for beer lovers right in the heart of the Cvikov Brewery.

  • 2020

The year 2020 marked a significant technological move forward for the Cvikov Brewery. We purchased a new storage silo for malt with mechanical transport straight to the masher. Thanks to this investment, it was no longer necessary to manually carry heavy fifty-kilogram bags of malt up more than seventy stairs to the upper floors of the brewery.

In the same year, we established a partnership with a nearby brewery, thanks to which we were able to offer our popular filtered Hvozd, 11% malt extract, in cans for the first time. This made our beer available to an even wider range of customers and made it possible to drink it in comfort outside restaurants and pubs.

  • 2021

The year 2021 saw the expansion of our range to include an artisan bakery and in-house pastry production. The bakery is famous for its classic Czech sourdough pastries as well as selected types of Italian and French pastries. Everything is prepared by hand and in a steam oven with premium ingredients. In addition to pastries, we are expanding our selection with traditional Czech desserts, sandwiches and delicacies, including holiday and seasonal specialities, which can also be made to order.

In August 2021, our team was strengthened by our head confectioner Pavel Juraška, who brought experience from leading Czech and foreign companies to Cvikov. His desserts, cakes, pralines and wedding cakes are prepared using only the very best ingredients and according to tried and tested Czech, Viennese and French recipes.

In 2021, we also fundamentally modernised the bottling of our craft beer. Manual bottle filling was replaced by a new semi-automatic filling line with a capacity of up to 1,500 bottles an hour. We bottle beer into glass bottles of various sizes and into plastic bottles with a volume of 1.5 l. Of course, we also fill kegs (most often 20, 30 and 50 litres). We can fill up to 30 of them per hour.

  • 2022

In 2022, we opened a new beer hall, which was created by reconstructing the lower part of the former malt house, replacing the existing barn. This transformation allowed us to expand the restaurant’s total capacity to 260 seats, including two outdoor terraces. The new premises are ideal for celebrations, corporate parties, weddings, business meetings and conferences.

The increase in capacity was accompanied by an expansion of the kitchen, which was achieved by adding a modern extension to the historical brewery building. This enables us to offer our guests quality cuisine at even larger events.

  • 2023

The separate Hvozd lounge, named after the former malt drying plant, was built next to the upper restaurant. Its round table can comfortably seat up to 12 people, making it an ideal place for smaller family celebrations or business meetings. The room’s unique atmosphere is underlined by decorations with historical artefacts.

Since 2023, the brewery has had its own analytical and microbiological laboratory. Thanks to the laboratory’s modern equipment, we can continuously check the quality of our beer and the individual stages of brewing. The laboratory makes sure that every batch meets the required parameters, not only in terms of taste and aroma, but also in terms of microbiological purity and chemical composition. This allows us to guarantee a high standard of quality in our beers.

  • 2024

In January 2024, the Kutná Hora Municipal Brewery became part of our brewery family. This merger has allowed us to significantly expand our range of beers with top-fermented IPA, APA and ale type beers, which complement our traditional range.

We also included more types of pasteurised beers, dark beer and non-alcoholic beers in classic and fruity variants. Thanks to this partnership, we can satisfy an even wider range of tastes and wishes of our customers in the Czech Republic and abroad.

In February 2024, we expanded our Prague businesses with another company – Sladovna Lužiny. The new restaurant in the western part of Prague has all our beers on tap. It offers a pleasant seating area, including an outdoor garden, and fine home cooking to both locals and visitors to the neighbourhood. The quality of the food here is also supervised by well-known chef Jiří Král, just like in our other branded restaurants.

  • 2025

In 2025, we expanded the brewery’s facilities with new parking spaces on the neighbouring land, which historically also belonged to the Cvikov brewery. Visitors are now provided with more comfort and better accessibility.
